ABOUT:
"SCAR" is a site-specific new-media installation that reflects on the cinematic glamorization of violence, and the appropriation of cinematic narratives, stereo types, and attitudes of heroism by urban street culture.
DESCRIPTION & FUNCTIONALITY:
Along with "ALTAR.ATIONS," a series of public interventions taking place during Uptown Art Stroll 2010 at various street corners and buildings in Northern Manhattan, "SCAR" reflects on Hollywood's cinematic narratives and their transcendence to real life urban culture. As visitors approach the black box structure of the installation, their images are reflected on a shattered surface. The small hole, made by the impact of a bullet, allows them to catch glimpses of one of the most gang-venerated and emulated films in recent years, Scarface (1983), and its various adaptations in media and commercial entertainment. The movie's re-mixed dialogue and sound can be heard when visitors are at a very close range and within the walls of the installation. Dimensions (in inches): 93 Height x 42.5 Width x 33 Depth.
