Description:
P/T Conversations is a public performance/intervention to take place in a restaurant, club, or bar frequented by immigrant day laborers. Strangers are invited to dictate a short letter to the artist who will type and re-enact it as he reads it back to the sender.
Background:
Twice a week, I find myself always in the same spot, usually around the same time, and sitting at the same table. I order the same thing; a “torta,” a beef cutlet Mexican sandwich, with no beans, extra mayo, and Jarritos, a tall grapefruit soft drink. Though my meal is not elaborate, I like to stay in the place for three or sometimes four hours. Since no one has ever asked me to leave after I eat, and because one day, by accident, I discovered that there is wireless connection, I’ve made the small Mexican taquería my working studio outside of my studio. It is there that I’ve had some of my most creative conversations with myself and have gotten truly inspired. My interaction with the rest of the regular costumers (most of them day laborers) is limited, but we’ve forged a silent sense of communal experience: the time of the day, the meals, the solitude, and the music (mostly sad norteñas and melancholic rancheras) that is played on the digital faux-neon jukebox.
