About:
“MIzAMERICA” is a solo exhibition by artist Hector Canonge. Inspired by his weekly visits to the local Miss America Dinner, his experiences of living in the United States, and his observations about the idiosyncrasies of war, Canonge, explores the myths of beauty, identity and patriotism in relation to popular American culture.
Description:
“MIzAMERICA,” at the Visual Arts Gallery of New Jersey City University, consisted of the following works: The video installation “Here she comes…” about the myths of beauty and power; the multimedia installation and single channel video “Toy Soldiers,” about the military and gender identity; the performance-installation piece, “Gilded Cage,” explores immigration issues based on Sayat Novas poems of exhile and on Canonge's early performance in New York City; and the video "Ms. A" featuring students of the college and their ideas on beauty and the military. In addition to the exhibition, two site-specific project events; "Beauty Contest" and "Military Recruitment Post" invited the participation of the college’s student body and the involvement of the local community over a period of two days.
