About:

"AVALON: Meditative Labyrinth" is a public installation created for FIGMENT 2010 at Governors Island, NYC. The large structure, built in the Parade Ground of the island, explores notions of confinement while at the same time opens the possibilities for reflection and creative possibilities.

Description:
"AVALON: Meditative Labyrinth" is an octagonal maze made with biodegradable wooden stakes and eco-friendly natural-colored red and orange rope. The temporary structure invites the public to retrace its 3 circuit design which was inspired by Medieval out door gardens in the shape of a labyrinth. Based on ancient beliefs and practices where certain types of labyrinths promote meditation and contemplation, AVALON exists in an open environment. Its structure and form was based on Medieval symbology of the number 8 representing powerful rebirth and renewal.
